i see you round all over town you never seem real up, you never seem real down you kinda smile, you kinda frown yes, you’re the mona lisa of guitar town I’d like to make you laugh once in a while Maybe cry, maybe coo, maybe do a little, “oh baby, wow!” But truth be told, I’d be your clown cuz you’re the mona lisa of guitar town Every female mystery has buffoon counterpart I wonder if I even have it to make it in the dark cuz if I were so lucky to be wrapped round your finger I’d go from snake in your grass, to dog on your leash, to just laundry in your ringer

Tonight we’re closer on our barstools Our eyes in the mirror almost meet But it’s been such a while, since we even shared a smile It’ll be with separate strangers that we leave We couldn’t keep ourselves from roaming We took our turns at which of us would cry ‘Till suddenly we found, with all that sleeping around Separate homes in the blinking of an eye Now my arms are reaching, for someone new Each night to someone else I’ll be untrue And I know you’ll do the same, it’s our lonely barroom game And I’m cheating my way back to you I hardly remember how it started I can’t say which of us was the first to stray I just remember the pain of watching you kiss in the rain Now after you I’m loving purely out of shame Still my arms keep reaching, for someone new Each night to someone else I’ll be untrue And I know you’ll do the same, it’s our lonely barroom game And I’m cheating my way back to you The odds are getting better every evening As we move down the bar from different ends It’s just a matter of time, ‘till each of us will find Next in line it’s going to be you and me again And then my arms’ll be reaching Like you’re someone new Each night to you my darlin’, I’ll be untrue And I know you’ll do the same, it’s our mixed-up barroom game And I’m cheating my way back to you Yes I’m cheating my way back to you

High Horse 03:22
Come on down from that high horse you’re on it ain’t all that great so just let the damn thing run I’ve heard it all & now I’ve heard it all, again, you ain’t sayin’ nothin’ new, so don’t pretend oh, I try to let it go & if the bull sticks me, try not to let it show I see the wounded staring at a wall the streets are paved with hope and fear the gravestones loom so tall solo I hear it in the morning, at noon & late at night TV, shopping malls, bars, and it ain’t right it take some kind of will to stand up right when everyone in the whole damn world just wants a fight oh oh I try to let it go & if the bull sticks me, try not to let it show I see the wounded staring at a wall the streets are paved with hope and fear the gravestones loom so tall Come on down from that high horse you’re on it ain’t all that great so just let the damn run let it run, let it run…

Tennessee 05:32
Dad would say hand me that rifle I’m off to shoot squirrels to no one, cuz no one was there He lost his legs and an arm, but the lawsuit won him a farm & they rigged up a tractor and gun, for one busted up son of a gun Mother went to the movies, with strange men in new cars Dad sunk deeper into his wounds  mumbling and drinking, till they tossed him from the bar I’d go out and find him sleeping under the stars Chorus: So Mother moved us up to City to the big city lights where the neighbors don’t judge & the spotlights burn bright where grownups are grownups doing grownup things and those Tennessee memories wash away in the rain Yeah we got a lot of money from Dad’s big accident even if all the lawyers were where most of it was spent but we were already a broken branch of a family & the money bore fruit as ugly as the seed Chorus: Up in the city the big city lights, burned away the thought of my old man’s plight Cuz here big boys are grownups in the tough city night and those Tennessee memories fade away of that broken old man with the gun in his hand, & the whisky pouring like rain solo I was up in Korea, at the end of the war my sergeant was a bear, but with the note that he bore showed me a soft side I had never quite seen & I flew back to state side on leave, for Dad was found lying dead in a field My brother met me at the depot, the melons were ripe in the fields we broke them all open, ate all the hearts, we knew the rest would lay rotting away,  and the dew would fall & the squirrels would play Chorus: We moved up to the city to the big city lights where the neighbors don’t judge & the club lights burn bright where grownups are grownups doing grownup things and those Tennessee memories wash away in the rain

I’m sittin high upon a white tornado thinking about the good things that have come and gone there’s a rut deep and narrow in the earth just behind me cut into the sands of time, colored red, white, and blue We had a wild ride across this countryside no one knew what hit ‘em they up & died we can look back now with just a hint of sorrow while the storm keeps on rambling just a wind without a trail there was a lot of glamour, but a lot more calamity lots to remember, maybe, more to forget while every life has meaning, some can only stick to dreaming that the sun rises above the storm, to live a brighter day We had a wild ride across this countryside no one knew what hit em they up & died while the storm keeps on rambling, just a wind without trail

I was standing in a cornfield Waiting for the Lord to take me away I was standing in the cornfield but he got away If you see, see my lord would you tell him where I’ve been I’m standing in that cornfield, that’s where I’ve been trip me up, throw me down get my soul spinning around and around fire up my dreams, burn all my hopes tell me my faith is just a joke yes, I’m standing in that cornfield mourning my long lost lord I’ll go back to my world another poor, lost soul solo I’m still standing in that cornfield waiting for my lord I’ve built a life around it tastes a little bit like hell

I’m on my own, without you here No one to care, no one near blazing a trail, no need to fear, I’ve been here before the horizon looks big, and bigger from here the path seems harder, with my advancing years but there’s no time to fret, you’ve opened the door & I’ve been here before Yes, I’ve been here before, so many times It’s getting so comfy, heartache seems like a lie I wake up alone, nobody home, just stirring my coffee & staring at my phone It’s been a while, your face, it recedes all my life’s memories into each other bleed my coffee is weak, my heart’s incomplete but I’ve been here before solo Yes, I’ve been here before, so many times It’s getting so comfy, heartache seems like a lie I wake up alone, nobody home, just stirring my coffee & staring at my phone It’s been a while, your face, it recedes all my life’s memories into each other bleed my coffee is weak, my heart’s incomplete but I’ve been here before

Scarsdale 03:29
I remember how I remembered, but I no longer remember there’s only a scar standing proud and tall like a wall — a wall I can lean on, like a good friend, til I see you again so I guess I’m still living and hoping you forgive me for what I feel when you’re gone or with me I try not to be the weak man I distain til thoughts cease to be, may your image live in me
9.
you never told me that you didn’t love me you never said I’d never be the one though perhaps you acted like you hated how I treated you and you never held me like you were in love I’m sorry that I never said the right thing perhaps I feared my heart would be destroyed but it doesn’t matter, it happened anyway & I think about you nearly all the time its not the words you’d say, but, I guess you never wanted to stay & you still hate that I still love you today it’s a small price to pay a broken heart is worth the wait though I guess you still hate that I’m in love with you today I wake up in the morning asking why you are not here It’s never felt like you’ve gone far away, infact, you feel quite near I shave and shower and hope I might run into you again & I still can’t understand how you fell in love with him
10.
when the chips are down, would he catch you when you fall you say he treats you like a star, but would he catch you when you fall cuz when he’s doing his thing, won’t even take your call you know you look so fine, I know you show him a good time i see you got some bling, and you’re his sweet little thing but if your well runs dry, he’s gonna make you cry chorus: I hear you baby calling my name, I don’t understand how it’s still the same we move on to others, but keep playin’ our game lord almighty, we never even left the ring solo cuz when the chips are down, he’s just another clown and when he gives you bling, it’s not like wearing his ring and when it’s all goes cold, & you’ll be lonely and old
11.
heya pretty baby, I think you are the bomb I’ll show you every honky tonk in this noisy town you come from far away, that i can plainly see you’re excited to be down here in nashville tennessee step out into the alley, got a little thing to share lets go from bar to bar tonight like we just don’t care bachelorette baby, sucking fireballs woo-hooing from your pedal tavern at every car buying up the cowboy hats with blisters on your feet from those brand new cowboy boots you got walking down the street Lets take another uber up to the midtown bars hot chicken and a cupcake, before we play ping-pong and if by chance you might feel sick, don’t worry while you play the uber guy will get you to the hotel where you stay you’ll sleep away your drunk, while he cleans up his car then you’ll wake again at 10pm and head back to the bars bachelorette baby, sucking fireballs woo-hooing from your pedal tavern at every car buying up the cowboy hats with blisters on your feet from those brand new cowboy boots you got walking down the street

You’ve made your point, my Charlotte, dear You showed me what you think You said you never loved that man, All you’ve ever felt was hate I doubted you, I could not see you loved me pure and true I let myself fill with jealousy and painted you untrue Chorus: Alas, I know, but much too late that I was wrong, so wrong And now they’ve buried that evil man and sentenced you to the grave solo A lady you were, til all was lost ’til your heart gave up on a life of loss & led you to revenge so sweet as to lead you to your grave Chorus: Alas, I know, but much too late that I was wrong, so wrong And now they’ve buried that evil man and I must leave you in this ground
